Strong winds leave thousands without power in SE Louisiana

Strong winds left thousands without power last night in Orleans, Jefferson and St. John parishes.

Despite reports that a tornado formed in the area, emergency managers say that was not the case. A spokeswoman for St. John Parish said straight line winds were responsible for the outages and damage in the area. Witnesses say winds caused brick wall along the side of a strip mall near Belle Terre Road and Airline Drive to collapse. Investigators are looking in to the cause of the damage.

No injuries were reported according to emergency managers, but power outages reached more than 1,400 customers in Orleans Parish, over 1,900 in Jefferson Parish and about 600 in St. John Parish at their worst according to Entergy outage maps.

Hundreds were still without power early this morning, but electricity has since been restored.
