AMITE, LA (WVUE) -

A Tangipahoa Parish sheriff's spokesperson said the sheriff's office had a K-9 unit here tracking Verdelle Moore's scent to try to pick up which way the escaped inmate may have gone.

Moore was in jail in Amite, charged with first-degree murder in relation to the drive by shooting death of 37-year-old Sandra Butler back in February. The sheriff's office said she was not the intended target of a drive by shooting they believe started with a fight about rap music lyrics. Moore was awaiting trial, but escaped Sunday night.

"Immediately, it's a shutdown of the jail, assess the situation, make sure everyone is secure and safe," said TPSO spokesperson Dawn Panepinto. "There was definitely a breach of security and all of those measures are being investigated and taken care of at this time."

Sheriff Daniel Edwards said he has all available manpower out searching throughout the parish for Moore. They do not know where he may be headed, and deputies are knocking on doors of his known friends and family now.

He can be identified by a large tattoo on his neck.

If you have information on a crime, simply call Tangipahoa Crimestoppers at 1-800-554-5245. You are not required to give your name, and you may be eligible to receive a cash reward.
