Terrebonne sheriff warns people about phone scams

HOUMA, LA (WVUE) - The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office is warning people about telephone scams involving court fees and unpaid taxes.

Sheriff Jerry Larpenter said his office has received multiple complaints about a caller who tells residents that they have outstanding arrest warrants and must forward court fees in order to clear them.

Larpenter said TPSO does not contact people and demand money. Anyone who receives a suspicious call should ignore it and report it to TPSO, he said.

Residents have also reported callers claiming to be IRS agents and demanding unpaid taxes, Larpenter said. He said anyone who receives such a call should contact the IRS directly to verify its legitimacy.
