Pelicans sign rookie guard Russ Smith

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) -

The New Orleans Pelicans and rookie guard Russ Smith have agreed to a contract. The deal was announced Tuesday by the team and due to the club's policy, the contract's terms were not released.

Smith, who won a National Championship with Louisville, was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 47th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft before being traded to New Orleans for guard Pierre Jackson. The 6'0 guard finished his collegiate career as the only player in Louisville basketball history with at least 1,800 points, 350 assists and 250 steals.

During his senior year, he averaged 18.2 points, 4.6 assists and 2.0 steals. He was named a consensus All-American and all0AAC first team honors. Over his four years in Louisville, Smith averaged 14.3 points, 2.8 assists and 1.9 steals in 133 games.

Two games into the preseason, and Drew Brees still hasn't got on the field. Instead, the most airtime Brees got was with the family before kickoff. Without No. 9 in the lineup, the Saints offense turned the ball over four times in the first half. The Cardinals capitalized on the mistakes, and beat the Saints, 20-15.
