Cedric Grant named Executive Director of Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans

One of Mayor Mitch Landrieu's deputy mayors becomes the head of the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans despite a state ethics board ruling against the move.

Wednesday, the board of directors of the sewerage and water board selected Cedric Grant as its new executive director.

His selection was initially blocked by the state ethics board under an ethics law which said any board member has to wait two years after they leave before they can be employed by the sewerage and water board.

Since Mayor Landrieu has a seat on the board, but sent Grant to most meetings in his place, the ethics board ruled Grant was essentially acting as a board member and would have to wait two years before he could take over as the executive director.

Last month Governor Jindal signed a bill that clarified the intent of the law and enabled Grant to take the position.

In a statement released Wednesday, Mayor Landrieu says "as the new executive director of the sewerage and water board, he will continue his efforts to rebuild and strengthen the infrastructure that is so critical to our city's growth and future. There is no person better prepared to take on the task of modernizing this critical public utility."

Since 2010, Grant has served as Deputy Mayor of Facilities, Infrastructure and Community Development for New Orleans.
