THIBODAUX, LA (WVUE) - A Thibodaux woman was arrested for drug possession and child desertion after she was spotted walking along the roadside early Wednesday morning.
Deidre Thomas, 42, faces child desertion, possession of crack cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting an officer.
At about 2:15 a.m., deputies on proactive patrol saw Thomas walking down Tiger Drive and stopped to check on her. During questioning they saw her gripping what turned out to be a crack pipe in her hand, according to Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre.
Police said Thomas initially gave them a false name, but eventually identified herself and admitted that she had left her two children, ages 4 and 9, at home alone. A small amount of crack cocaine was also found, Webre said.
Thomas was taken into custody and the children were turned over to a family member. She remains jailed on a $14,550 bond.
