IG: Orleans sheriff's contract award process raises 'very large red flag'

Inspector General Ed Quatrevaux raised concerns Thursday about a multimillion dollar contract for mental health services at Orleans Parish Prison.

In a letter to Sheriff Marlin Gusman, Quatrevaux said it was his understanding that the selection committee planned to meet behind closed doors Thursday.

He warned the sheriff, "The selection of contractors in private is a very large red flag to procurement auditors."

The IG asked Gusman to open the process to public scrutiny.

In response, the sheriff's office insisted it's following the rules for contracts.

A statement said the selection panel made a unanimous recommendation, but didn't say who won.
