Raycom Media and DirecTV continue talking and hope to reach a resolution in the morning. Thank you for your continued patience. We promise to keep you updated.
UPDATE: September 5th, 9:17pm
DirecTV has returned to the negotiations. We will keep you up to date.
We know how important NFL football is to you, and we are doing everything we can to make sure you see the games you care about Sunday. We tried to get DirecTV to run the Saints game in New Orleans on WVUE, but they wouldn't agree to do it.
So we are offering free antennas to fans who can't watch the games because of DirecTV. Here's how it works:
- If you are a DirecTV subscriber, go buy an antenna in any local store (you may want to call first because there's been a bit of a run on the market because of DirecTV's actions).
- Send us a copy of your receipt, and a copy of the first page of your DirecTV bill, to Raycom Media, 201 Monroe Street, Montgomery, AL 36104 (attn: Antenna Rebate by September 30, 2014.
- As long as the receipt shows that store where you bought the antenna is in the New Orleans DMA, and is dated September 1-7, we will send you a check for up to $30 (limit one per customer).
We understand that this process is a little old-fashioned, but it's the only way we could think of to get people free antennas in time for the games. Hope this helps. Meanwhile, we are trying hard to get DirecTV to agree to put the stations back up.
UPDATE: September 5th, 7:35pm
Raycom Media has worked all day to get a deal done and offered to continue into the night. DirecTV admitted it only needs under 2 hours to get Raycom back on the air so why are they walking away from the discussions now? Call them and ask…1-800-531-5000. We have an offer on the table and will be here all night if needed to hear back from DirecTV.
We Live Here
Over the years we value that you have come to rely on FOX 8. We value your loyalty, and we regret that our service has been interrupted for some of our viewers. There is a lot of noise and half-truths in the media about the situation with DirecTV. Please bear with us while we give you more background on what's really happening.
As a local broadcaster, we have a longstanding special relationship with the Southeast Louisiana that we have been serving for 61 years. We have teams of people dedicated to providing local news, weather, sports and entertainment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. You know a lot of those people. While DirecTV, located in Los Angeles, may not think too much about dropping FOX 8 from their service, it's a big deal to us- we live here.
The Economics of FOX 8
Our economics are simple. We invest heavily in the content that makes FOX 8 great. That includes local programming, like hours and hours of local news and weather and top tier national programming from our network, which costs us much more today than it did three years ago. We offer all of this programming at no cost to you in its entirety, 24/7/365 over the air and on our digital platforms.
In addition to offering our programming over the air, online and on mobile devices, we also provide it to pay TV providers for a small fee per month. This dispute is about what that fee is for DirectTV. We offer some of the best sports and entertainment programming on TV, like Saints Football, American Idol, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and 9 hours/day of top quality local news and weather coverage. All of that comes at a cost, and those costs increase over time. In fact the cost of our network programming has more than doubled every year on average for the last three years.
We are asking DirecTV to cover their fair share of those increases, like any business would, since our last deal with them is 3 years old. But you deserve to know that what we are asking for is a fraction of what DIRECT TV pays some cable networks that are not nearly as popular in New Orleans. In an average hour, 9% of the our viewing audience watches FOX 8. DirectTV pays other content providers that have a much smaller audience 4x more than what we are asking for. Said another way, DirecTV pays certain cable networks four times what we are asking for, while those same cable networks have a fraction of our audience! DirectTV doesn't understand why FOX 8 is so important to Southeast Louisiana. Why else wouldn't they be willing to pay a fair price?
We Need Your Help
We hate the fact that DirecTV took FOX 8 off their air. Serving Southeast Louisiana is why we get up every morning. If you hate it too, and want to get it back, let DirecTV know that you are not happy. DirecTV is based in Los Angeles, they won't know who you are unless you call and ask them to bring back FOX 8. Here is how you can reach them:

You can also get FOX 8 for free anytime with an antenna. While it's a major inconvenience to switch pay TV providers, you have the right to fire people that aren't providing the service you want and pay for. Raycom Media wants this to stop too.
