Man killed in fatal hit-and-run on La. 10 while 4-wheeling

KENTWOOD, LA (WVUE) -

A Vacherie man was killed in a hit-and-run Friday night while riding his 4-wheeler beside La. 10 near Kentwood.

State Police say Matthew J. Mahler, 22, was riding a 4-wheeler  in the drainage ditch running along the north side of La. 10 with another person on a separate 4-wheeler.

For an unknown reason, investigators say Mahler struck a culvert in the ditch and flipped his 4-wheeler. He was ejected from the vehicle and landed in the westbound lane of La. 10.

His companion attempted to help him, but a small dark colored sedan came down the highway and struck Mahler, not stopping after rolling over the fatally wounded man.

Police responded to the scene around 11 p.m. and transported Mahler to the St. Helena Parish Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Police say Mahler was not wearing a Department of Transportation approved helmet and alcohol is suspected on Mahler's part. A blood sample was collected for toxicological analysis.

Troopers believe the vehicle that struck Mahler could have lower front bumper and undercarriage damage as a result of the crash.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Louisiana State Police Troop L at 985-893-6250.
