Port Sulfur man arrested on drug possession, distribution charges

A six month investigation has led to the arrest of a Port Sulfur man, charged with distributing narcotics from his residence that housed eight children.

Albert Vereen Jr., 33, was arrested on drug possession and distribution charges. The arrest concluded a six-month investigation into Vereen's illegal activities.

In February 2014, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division received a tip that Vereen was allegedly selling powder and crack cocaine in southern Plaquemines Parish. Following an investigation, agents say they learned that Vereen was distributing the illegal narcotics from his residence. A search warrant was obtained for the home.

On Wednesday, agents made contact with Vereen near the intersection of Highway 11 and Hauser Lane in Buras. He was detained without incident.

Police say shortly after, the narcotics division and SWAT team served the search warrant on his home. At the time the search, the residence was occupied by Vereen's girlfriend and eight children, ranging from the ages 6-14.

Agents say they seized approximately 40 grams of heroin and a small amount of marijuana from the home. Detectives say they also collected items commonly used for illegal narcotics packaging and resale, including sandwich bags, baking soda and digital scales. Additionally, agents seized $4,314 in cash which was believed to be proceeds from Vereen's illegal activities.

During questioning, police say Vereen acknowledged ownership of all narcotics and paraphernalia within the residence, as well as admitted to being a drug dealer.

Vereen was arrested and transported to the Belle Chasse Lockup where he was booked on numerous drug charges. Vereen remains in the custody of the Sheriff's Office without bond pending a Magistrate hearing.

Vereen's past criminal history includes arrests for possession with the intent to distribute crack cocaine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, aggravated battery, domestic abuse, battery, resisting arrest and possession of a firearm with a controlled dangerous substance.

In 2009, Vereen was convicted in Plaquemines Parish for possession of a schedule II controlled dangerous substance.
