After Further Review: Why preseason still matters

It can be exciting. It can boring. At times it can be downright sloppy.

It's the NFL preseason. And it's finally upon us.

While the start of preseason always generates a buzz, the length of the exhibition schedule has long been debated.

It's a fair argument. Are four games really necessary to get ready for a season?

I say yes.

True, the outcomes are meaningless. But the evaluations made over the next four weeks are invaluable.

That's the real necessity of preseason.

Without preseason games, would the Saints have had the foresight to cut fourth-round pick Antonio Pittman in favor of Pierre Thomas? With no preseason, Junior Galette may be getting double digit sacks, but in another uniform. With no preseason, is Tim Lelito battling Jonathan Goodwin for a starting position in just his second season?

You get the point.

Coach Payton has always believed it makes no difference how a player gets to an organization, it's what they do once they are there.

There is no bigger time of year where that message rings true than now in the preseason.

Tonight it begins, and in my six years covering the team, it's always the main thing I look for during these games. Who is the next Thomas, Galette or Lelito?

We'll soon find out.

The games may not count, but the players it produces certainly have and will continue to make a difference when they finally do.
