(RNN) - Dr. Kent Brantly, one of two Americans flown to the U.S. after contracting Ebola in Africa, has released a statement saying he is “growing stronger every day.”

Brantly, a doctor with Christian humanitarian group Samaritan’s Purse, says he is receiving "the best treatment possible" at Emory Hospital in Atlanta along with missionary Nancy Writebol.

Brantly was caring for Ebola patients when he contracted the disease himself.

“When Ebola spread into Liberia, my usual hospital work turned more and more toward treating the increasing number of Ebola patients,” Brantly said in a letter released Friday. “I held the hands of countless individuals as this terrible disease took their lives away from them. I witnessed the horror first-hand, and I can still remember every face and name.”

The World Health Organization estimates Ebola outbreaks can kill up to 90 percent of those who contract the disease.

Both Brantly and Writebol were the first patients to be given an experimental serum aimed at treating Ebola. It’s not known it the serum directly contributed to their conditions improving, as the treatment has never been tested.

“I thank God for His mercy as I have wrestled with this terrible disease. I also want to extend my deep and sincere thanks to all of you who have been praying for my recovery as well as for Nancy (Writebol) and for the people of Liberia and West Africa,” Brantly said.
