Trailer full of melons catches fire during repair work

A truck that was being used to repair the refrigeration on a produce trailer burst into flames Friday in Slidell.

The fire broke out at about 2 p.m. in the back parking lot of the Associated Wholesale Grocers warehouse on Old Military Road.

Firefighters from St. Tammany Fire Protection District No. 11 responded and were assisted by St. Tammany Fire Protection District No. 1.

When they arrived, firefighters were met with a large plume of smoke and flames coming from the trailer. The repair truck had already burned completely.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials suspect it was started when a torch being used in the repair work ignited flammable gases stored on the truck.

No building exposures or other vehicles were in danger at the time, and no one was injured.
