BATON ROUGE, LA (WVUE) - This Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals confirmed 13 new cases of West Nile virus this week, bringing this year's total to 42 reported cases.
This week's new infections include three neuroinvasive disease cases in Caddo Parish, and one each in East Baton Rouge and Livingston parishes. There were also four new cases of West Nile fever reported in Caddo, Calcasieu and one in East Baton Rouge Parish, and one asymptomatic case each in Ascension and East Baton Rouge parishes.
"People should always be on guard around mosquitoes," said DHH State Epidemiologist Dr. Raoult Ratard. "As long as mosquitoes are biting, we are all at risk. In previous years, we've had West Nile virus cases as late as December, so don't let your guard down."
