HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

When the Johnson brothers learned they couldn't sing on a Henrico street corner to help their parents pay the bills, the community stepped up to help fill the void.

The brothers, 13-year-old Trajlen, 12-year-old Taevone, 11-year-old Tashaun, and 8-year-old Tarrin have spend the past two and a half months living in a hotel with their parents.

Their mother had lost her job and their father had his hours reduced. The parents have also been going through their own legal troubles.

"It's been very difficult, very stressful," said their mother Tsedale Wallace, who is a certified medical assistant. Their father is a cook.

The boys heard their parents talking about not being sure if they could afford another day in the hotel. So Trajlen decided the boys should sing at the intersection of Broad Street and Glenside Drive to raise money.

"I felt bad because if we weren't able to stay I wouldn't know where else we could have gone," said Trajlen.

Passing drivers began donating cash to the boys, until Henrico police asked them to stop.  Panhandling is illegal in Henrico. But Trajlen says the officers offered a donation of their own and told the boys they are very talented.

Their mother is overcome by her boys' generosity.

"They're good boys," she said through tears. "They're really good boys and I couldn't ask for anything more, I'm very blessed."

Since news of their plight has gone public, donors have offered to pay for another month in the hotel, with others offering to help with school supplies.

In a report last year, Henrico County Public Schools reported for the 2012-2013 school year there were 903 homeless students. For the 2011-2012 school year there were 952. In Richmond, for the 2012-2013 school year there were 1,393 homeless students. For the 2011-2012 school year there were 1,705 homeless students.

If you want to help a fund has been set up through Well Fargo bank. You can go to any branch and donate to the fund under "Johnson Brothers" or "Tsedale Wallace." Wallace is their mother.
