Cracked 300-year-old oak tree closes Madisonville street

MADISONVILLE, LA (WVUE) - A giant oak tree in Madisonville is cracked near its base and is about to fall. Mayor Peter Gitz estimates the tree is about 300 years old. Water Street, which runs along the Tchefuncte River is blocked off for safety purposes. Gitz says his office will call out an expert to see if the tree can be saved, but if it cant, he plans to hire a crew to bring it down.

The tree is located near the intersection of Water Street and Highway 22, in front of Morton's Restaurant, a Madisonville landmark.
