A Carnival krewe has announced plans to allow women to officially join its organization.
The Krewe of Alla states that it will remove all by-laws limiting membership to men. The krewe held its all-male distinction for 82 years.
The Algiers-based krewe, founded in 1932, allowed women to ride on its floats for the past two years. They paraded Uptown for the first time this past Carnival season.
Alla is the fifth oldest parading organization in the New Orleans area.
Alla's next membership meeting, which is open to the public, will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, at Mardi Gras World.
