Pieces of police tape still mark the corner of N. Broad and Treasure St. In the 7th Ward.
The New Orleans Police Department responded Saturday night to a report of a man down in front of a dental clinic. Police say a 27-year-old man was shot several times and later died at the hospital. Investigators believe the man was riding in a white Infiniti with a 24-year-old woman. She was also shot in the arm and the leg, but she managed to drive herself to the hospital.
A neighbor who has lived in the area for decades says violence like this is not the norm. He didn't want to reveal his identity, but says mostly elderly live on the street.
"There are four houses that are actually occupied on this block," said the man. "It's usually quiet. Nothing out of the ordinary that goes on around here."
The double shooting was the first of two in the 7th Ward Saturday night. A few house later, police were called out to the 1400 block of Frenchman St. There, investigators found an unidentified man in the street. He had shoot several times and died at the scene.
"It's definitely sad," said Mark Weller, who lives nearby. "It's sad to hear about any shooting anywhere, but it does hit home a little harder when it's right here."
All this comes just days after the NOPD announced the murder rate for New Orleans dropped by eight percent in the first half of 2014. But for those close to Saturday's shooting, the states provide little comfort.
"I was worried," said another neighbor near Treasure St who didn't wish to be identified. "I got family members staying on this block. My heard kind of dropped."
