A new NOPD recruit class will begin training Tuesday, announced Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Interim Police Chief Michael Harrison.
The new class, #171, is made up of 32 recruits who will receive 25 weeks of training and is set to graduate in early 2015.
An additional recruit class of 23 will graduate from the NOPD training academy in November.
Mayor Landrieu and Interim Chief Harrison said more than 800 people have applied to become NOPD officers in the past two months. That's a 900 percent increase from a year ago.
This is the first class under Harrison and the 4th under the Landrieu administration.
