According to a sheriff's office news release, 34-year-old Deputy Jude Harris was injured in the wreck with the woman at Earhart Boulevard and Pine Street at about 11:30 a.m. The woman's name is not being released.

Both were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Information on their conditions was not immediately available.

Our partners at NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune report that firefighters had to pry open the crushed driver's side door of the marked police unit to get to Harris. Authorities tell the newspaper that Harris apparently crashed into a sport utility vehicle, which was badly damaged, before running onto the neutral ground on Earhart Boulevard.
