Tulane football returns Uptown with opening of Yulman Stadium

After a 40 year void, Tulane Football is back on campus. The Green Wave took on Georgia Tech, Saturday, in its home opener.

Tulane didn't pull out a win, but it was still a big day to celebrate the opening of Yulman Stadium. Tailgating started early on campus with fans serving up good New Orleans-style food and 40 yr old memories.

Ed Mikkelsen has fond memories of the old Tulane Stadium when he played on the team.

"I played in the last game in 1974 against Ole Miss and then we moved on the Superdome. It was impressive at first, but it wasn't home," says Mikkelsen.

Oliver Delery, Jr was a student at that time. He says, "I was a sophomore when the last game was played on campus, so I got to see the '73 Tulane victory over LSU."

For Green Wave fans, the brand new Yulman Stadium is history in the making. Former Tulane player Joshua Smith says, "We were used to going to the Superdome, but real happy to have games back on campus."

Four decades in the making, Yulman Stadium opened to a sellout crowd Saturday afternoon as Tulane hosted Georgia Tech, losing in the end 38-21. For many, the momentous occasion was about more than football.

"We saw the last game at Tulane Stadium and now they first game here," says Janice and George Avery, both Tulane alums. For today's students, it's all about making new memories.

Yulman Stadium is equipped with all the bells and whistles and can hold 30 thousand people. It cost $73 million to build. But most agree the numbers aren't what's important.

Delery says, "I'm just glad to see all the local kids coming back to Tulane again. That brings local families here and just builds the spirit for Tulane."

Fans old and new say they're just thrilled to be part of a new era of Tulane football. "This is awesome," says Mikkelsen. "It's the best thing in a long, long time."

Yulman Stadium is named after Richard Yulman and his late wife, Janet.  The stadium's field is named after Saints, Pelicans and FOX 8 owner Tom Benson for his donation to the project.

The next home game for Tulane is Saturday September 13th. Kickoff against Southeastern Louisiana University is set for 7pm.
