Coast Guard calls off search for possible plane crash in Lake Pontchartrain

MANDEVILLE, LA (WVUE) - The search for a plane that might have possibly crashed in Lake Pontchartrain has been called off.

Coast Guard officials responded to reports of a possible plane crash in Lake Pontchartrain near Mandeville Saturday night around 8 p.m. A Piper-type plane was reportedly seen going into Lake Pontchartrain on the eastside of the Causeway Bridge between mile markers four and eight.

Although a missing or overdue aircraft has not been reported, officials received reports of a plane crash and launched a search for survivors.

Coast Guard rescue crews conducted more than eight hours of searches covering 155 square miles, according to the Coast Guard, no debris, sheen or any indication that a plane went down into the lake has been found.

Because no evidence of a downed plane was found, the Coast Guard is suspending its search unless further information becomes available.

Anyone that has information on this incident or on an overdue aircraft may call Coast Guard Sector New Orleans at 504-365-2209.
