SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - After a Sunday car accident that left him in a coma, Slidell Police detective John Cole died Wednesday.

Slidell Police released the following statement:

After a  strong fight, Detective John Cole passed away this afternoon.

Words cannot describe the tremendous loss of both Detective Cole and Daniel Hanlon. Both were engaged with our local community; Cole a public servant and Hanlon a teacher/coach.  Each one strived to make a difference in people's lives on the daily basis, and while doing so, touched the hearts of many.

Detective John Cole has left behind hundreds of loving friends, his parents, a wife, and two beautiful daughters; aged 4 and 6 months. Although the members of the Slidell Police Department are devastated, and are grieving the loss of one of our own, we are asking that your support and prayers be focused on the families of John Cole and Daniel Hanlon.

Chief Randy Smith says,"The upcoming days are going to be rough for all of us, but we will get through it. I want to thank the community for their overwhelming show of support for these two men who dedicated their lives by helping others."

We will keep you posted with funeral arrangements for Detective Cole.  Thank you for your continued support.
