4-alarm fire torches New Orleans East warehouse

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The New Orleans Fire Department responded to a four-alarm fire early Sunday morning at an abandoned warehouse in New Orleans East.

According to NOFD, firefighters responded to a 911 call reporting a fire at the two-story warehouse at 4701 Downman Road at 12:52 a.m. on Sept. 14.

A second alarm was called almost immediately on arrival after taking into account the size and condition of the building as well East he proximity to other buildings, according to NOFD. Third and fourth alarms were eventually called and the fire was contained at 3:17 a.m.

28 NOFD units responded to the incident totally 72 fire fighters. The New Orleans Police Department, New Orleans Emergency Medical Department and American Red Cross also responded to the incident.

The building had been abandoned since 2005 after Hurricane Katrina, according to NOFD. No injuries were reported. The cause is still under investigation.
