Witnesses say that the area was very busy at the time of the shooting, with people out on the street and a nearby seafood restaurant crowded with customers.

Five people were shot Monday night in New Orleans East, according to New Orleans police spokesman Officer Frank Robertson III.

The shooting was reported just before 8 p.m. in the 6700 block of Chef Menteur Highway near a convenience store and gas station.

All of the victims were men, ages 20, 27, 35, 54 and 60. Three drove themselves to the hospital and two were transported by EMS. There was no word on their conditions.

Police believe only one of the men was the intended target.

Several blocks of westbound Chef Menteur were closed as police investigate, and residents in the area are being asked to stay in their homes.
