A local musician has been arrested, accused of punching a deputy.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office arrested musician Shamarr Allen on Thursday and booked him with battery against a peace officer, according to an OPSO news release.

The office said Allen, who was scheduled to perform at Jazz in the Park at Armstrong Park, punched Deputy Thomas Elder several times in the head. Allen is accused of striking Elder as Allen was trying to get relatives past a security post even though they didn't present the proper backstage passes.

EMS personnel took Elder to the hospital for examination. The incident is under investigation.

Allen had a previous run-in with the law back in July. The musician claims state police roughed him up in the Ninth Ward for no reason.

State Police Colonel Mike Edmonson says after reviewing dash cam video of the incident, that his troopers acted appropriately.
