RESERVE, LA (WVUE) - An aircraft crashed on Sunday evening killing two passengers on board.
The accident occurred Sunday at 5:20 p.m. at the St. John Parish Airport in Reserve. The airport is owned and operated by the Port of South Louisiana.
According to port authorities, the gyrocopter aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff when its top propeller folded. The aircraft crashed in a drainage canal just west of the runway.
The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office has identified the occupants as Darren Mahler, 47 and family friend Payton Wilt, 13. Deputies say both occupants were from Metairie.
The Federal Aviation Administration is continuing their investigation.
