Arrest warrant issued in Marrero stabbing death

JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Jefferson Parish detectives have issued an arrest warrant in the fatal stabbing of a woman in Marrero. The warrant for one count of second-degree murder was issued Tuesday for 53-year-old Melvin Brooks Jr., who investigators were told is the boyfriend of the victim, identified as 50-year-old Linda Honeycutt. Her body was found Monday afternoon, just after 1:00 p.m. in the 1700 block of Jutland Drive in Marrero.

According to police, responding deputies arrived on scene and found the home on fire. Firefighters entered the home to find Honeycutt and Brooks, both suffering from multiple stab wounds. When both were removed from the home, it was determined that Honeycutt was dead. Brooks was rushed to University Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Through further investigation, detectives determined that Brooks was responsible for the stabbing death of Honeycutt and his stab wounds were self-inflicted. Brooks has several prior arrests including aggravated rape, simple battery and possession of cocaine.
