HS football sees increased security after shooting outside stadium

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - Additional police units are expected at a Metairie high school stadium Friday night after fights broke out in the stands and gunfire erupted outside of Joe Yenni Stadium last week.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office states that they are sending more deputies to work inside and outside of East Jefferson High School's stadium.

In addition to an increased uniformed officer presence, plain clothed officers will be assigned to areas around the venue.

Last Friday, a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman said several people were asked to leave the game after two fights broke out.

Following the game, a deputy on detail heard shots. Jason Henry, 20, was shot in the arm. According to police, 23-year-old Larry Beauchamp, 24-year-old Darius Gilbert and 20-year-old Andre Ridgely, all of Metairie, were arrested.

Gilbert and Ridgely were armed at the time of their arrests and none of the three arrested were students, police say.

"There are people that are in that stadium to enjoy the game and it's unfortunate that there's a chosen few that want to be disruptive and when that happens," said Colonel John Fortunato. "We make sure that we address it immediately."

That extra security will continue through the end of the high school football season. Thursday night, the attention returned to the field at Joe Yenni where Riverdale beat Lusher 37-23.
