On the prep scene, the top team in New Orleans, the Rummel Raiders, are up in the capital city tonight, to face one of Baton Rouge's best.
A very ambitious pre-district schedule so far has worked out for Rummel. They took down 5A powerhouse programs East St. John, Hahnville in a triple-overtime thriller, then blew out defending state champ Acadiana. Things don't get any easier for the Raiders this week as the take on another Top 10 team in Catholic High.
Well so far it's been good because it's worked out good," said coach Jay Roth. "We're 3-0 right now, but we have Catholic on the horizon. I couldn't enjoy the win Saturday night against Acadiana because I knew I was facing Mr. Guice."
Derius Guice will be the biggest name on the field tonight. He's the sixth-ranked running back in the country, according to 247 Sports, and the 5'11", 219-pound back is already a verbal commitment to LSU. Guice's game is very similar to another big-time ball carrier who's in the purple and gold now.
"I told the kids he's Leonard Fournette of this season," Roth said. "He's the second-best running back I've seen in 20 years of coaching, Fournette being the best. We have to have 11 guys running to the ball, tacklers all over. Because he can shake you in space, he'll be dangerous."
Rummel is currently ranked #15 in the country by USA Today. Last year, they didn't make it through the season undefeated, and coach Roth knows it'll be a Herculean task to achieve the feat in 2014.
"We're going to set off a celebration for somebody," Roth said. "Eventually, somebody might beat us. Everyone is gunning for us. We're the defending state champ, the Catholic League champ. You gotta play at your best, be focused, and everyone wants a piece of us. And we haven't gotten to district yet."
