The Magnolia Discount Market on Airline Highway is a popular stop for drivers in New Orleans. It's part of the reason why Willie Newman is surprised to hear the place was robbed early Saturday morning.
"Airline is a major highway," said Newman, citing the busy traffic going up and down the road. "It's kind shocking that people picked this gas station on a major highway. It let's you know people aren't scared of anything anymore."
The robbery was caught on tape. Surveillance footage shows a man in a dark hoodie point his weapon at the clerk, he then goes behind the counter, waits nervously for the clerk to clear out the register, and runs out the door.
The robbery happened a little after 5:00 a.m., some customers say they're glad it didn't happen at a busier time.
"It could've gotten crazy," said Desmond Bazile, who stopped by to pick up some cigarettes. "Some people could've been in there, some customers could've been in there."
This isn't the first time the store has been hit. Magnolia Discount has been robbed four times since July. The last time was at the beginning of September, not even a month ago.
The store has multiple cameras, and the NOPD is hoping the footage will help catch whoever's responsible.
As for customers like Willie Newman, who stops by often - he says he'll be a little more guarded the next time he walks in those doors.
"It's kinda scary to think I'm coming here to spend my money and they could get robbed," said Newman.
