Thibodaux neighbors plan to fight big box developers

THIBODAUX, LA (WVUE) - Some Lafourche Parish residents are worried about plans to put a big box store near their homes. Greg Torres has lived in the area for 23 years. He's one of many neighbors concerned about what will go up in the empty lot at the corner of Percy Brown Road. and Louisiana Highway 1.

While there has been talk of a Walmart being built in that location, neither the property owner nor Walmart have announced plans for a store. Neighbors say they still have questions.

"The street of the homes whose backyard back up to the property, what can they expect?" asked Torres. "Will we be hearing dumpsters late at night? Will the crime element increase?"

Residents say a big box store will also lower property values and bring more traffic through their usually quiet area.

"In the afternoon, everybody is outside walking their dogs and visiting their neighbors," said Gwen Cheramie who lives in the neighborhood.

Cheramie hopes to keep the peace and quiet; it's why she and a few others formed the Concerned Citizens of Lafourche group. They've passed out yard signs, started petitions and kicked off a letter-writing campaign.

"We are very concerned," explained Cheramie. "We worked really hard to live in a neighborhood that's quiet and safe. Now all of a sudden that's in jeopardy."

Residents like Torres say it's nothing against the big box companies.

"I have nothing against commercial development," said Torres. "I hope maybe they put a nine-to-five business, not one that is open all night."

Torres says he, like many in the area, just want to be in the loop when it comes to who's moving into the neighborhood.
