NOPD: Drunk driver crashes in Quarter, debris kills nearby pedestrian

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

A drunk driver crashed into a balcony pole in the French Quarter early this morning causing the pole to come down and kill a nearby pedestrian.

According to NOPD, 37-year-old Tevest Vance was traveling east on the 400 block of Burgundy Street when he struck a balcony pole. The victim, a 22-year-old woman, was walking on the sidewalk when the pole came down and struck her on the head. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police say Vance attempted to flee the scene, but his car stalled and he was stopped by someone who witnessed the crash. Vance was arrested and booked with Vehicular Homicide. The Orleans Parish Coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Blood and alcohol tests are pending.
