A drunk driver crashed into a balcony pole in the French Quarter, killing a pedestrian the morning before her 22nd birthday, police state.
The coroner has identified the victim as Taylor McGonigle of Baker, LA. McGonigle would have turned 22 Monday.
According to police, 37-year-old Tevest Vance was traveling east on the 400 block of Burgundy Street when he struck a balcony pole. The accident happened just after 5:15 a.m. Sunday.
The pole toppled, striking McGonigle in the head. Officers state she was walking on the sidewalk when the accident occurred. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
Police say Vance attempted to flee the scene, but his car stalled and he was stopped by someone who witnessed the crash. Vance was arrested and booked with Vehicular Homicide.
