HOUMA, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police Troop C detectives are investigating a shooting that involved a Houma Police officer. The incident occurred Saturday at 7:30 a.m. in the 300 block of Bergeron Street in Houma.
According to a LA State Police spokesperson, Houma Police received a call of a burglary at a home in the 300 block of Bergeron Street. The responding officer arrived on scene and found a hispanic man committing the crime. As the officer attempted to place the suspect under arrest, an altercation ensued and the officer fired his weapon hitting the suspect once. The suspect was able to run away from the officer before getting into his car and speeding away.
The officer, who was not hurt during the altercation, notified the department who put out a "be on the lookout" on the suspect and vehicle. Inside the home, police found a hispanic man who was pronounced dead on scene. The man's family, who was in a separate room at the time, was not hurt. A warrant was issue
The suspect was later located and arrested by St. James Parish Sheriff's Deputies. He was transported to University Hospital to be treated for his gunshot wound. Police say once released, the man will be booked into Orleans Parish Prison for first degree murder. He will later be transferred to the Terrebonne Parish Prison.
Police learned that the suspect and the deceased victim are related.
Houma Police requested for LA State Police to take over the investigation which continues.
The Terrebonne Parish Coroner will perform an autopsy to determine the murder victim's exact cause of death.
