Pedestrian dies after dump truck accident in Central City

A man walking along a busy stretch of Claiborne Avenue died after a dump truck accident Monday.

At about 11:40 a.m., a 38-year-old Luling woman was driving a Toyota van southbound on Martin Luther King Boulevard when she tried to turn eastbound onto South Claiborne Avenue. While making the turn, the van collided with a dump truck that was traveling eastbound on Claiborne. After the collision, the dump truck, which was being driven by a 52-year-old New Orleans man, overturned and struck a 66-year-old man who was walking on the sidewalk. The dump truck then struck a utility pole, a building and two parked vehicles. No one in the building was injured.

The pedestrian was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The driver of the dump truck was hospitalized in stable condition.The driver of the van was not injured.

No citations were immediately issued. Blood and alcohol tests are pending, and the investigation is ongoing.
