A New Orleans fire captain died Sunday after becoming ill during a training course in New Mexico, according to an NOFD news release.
Captain Troy Magee was a 13-year veteran of the NOFD assigned to one of the Special Operations Units.
"Captain Magee's knowledge, professionalism and most importantly his character, exemplified what it means to be a firefighter. As one of our promising young officers, he will be missed," said Superintendent Timothy McConnell.
Earlier this year, Magee received Mayor Mitch Landrieu's Outstanding Employee Award for rescuing a victim from a car crash while off duty on I-10 near Baton Rouge.
The captains remains will arrive in New Orleans on Wednesday night. His body will then be escorted by NOFD and the New Orleans Police Department to a local funeral home. Funeral arrangements are pending.
