(WVUE) -

Southbound lanes of the Causeway bridge have reopened after a major accident closed them just before noon Thursday.

The accident occurred about 4 miles from the south shore and sent the cab of an 18-wheeler partially over the guardrail, backing up traffic for hours.

"It appears that the driver of the truck wasn't paying attention," said Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou. "As he tried to correct, he started going over the bridge."

The drivers of two cars that were also involved were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Dufrechou said it took some very heavy machinery to move the truck, which had a broken axle. The truck had to be lifted onto a flatbed and taken off the bridge.

Lanes reopened at about 2:40 p.m.

The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.
