(WVUE) - Southbound lanes of the Causeway Bridge are closed as crews recover an attenuator truck from Lake Pontchartrain. Officials say they the bridge will be closed for approximately three hours, re-opening around 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The recovery process comes following a deadly accident Monday afternoon. The accident happened around 3:40 p.m. near mile marker 20.

According to Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou, a garbage truck rear-ended an attenuator vehicle, flipped, and then hit a police car, causing the police car to burst into flames. The attenuator vehicle went over the railing and into Lake Pontchartrain.

Police recovered the body of the driver just after 5 p.m..

The officer in the police car was able to escape unharmed.

The garbage truck driver, who was not injured, was cited for reckless operation, and more charges may be forthcoming as the investigation progresses, Dufrechou said.

An attenuator truck is a vehicle required on many roadwork projects. Its purpose is to provide a buffer between workers and vehicular traffic and absorb the impact of any crash.
