Police identify man responsible for shooting of Laplace woman

St. John the Baptist Sheriff's Deputies have identified a man who shot a woman multiple times. The incident occurred Monday at 10:47 p.m. in the 100 block of Dove Street in Laplace.

According to police, deputies responded to a call of a shooting. They located the woman in the driveway of a home on Dove Street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. She was transported to LSU Medical Center in New Orleans where she is listed in critical condition.

Witnesses told police that 56-year-old Dennis Johnson was responsible for the shooting. Investigators learned that the Johnson and the victim both lived at the home where the victim was found. The witnesses said that they were arguing about money before Johnson pulled out a gun and shot the victim. He then ran away from the scene. Police searched the area, but could not find Johnson.

Early Tuesday morning, police responded to the area near the intersection of Cardinal and Dove Streets. Calls came in about a man covered in mud, who was walking around in the area. Police located the man before identifying him as Johnson. He complained of a hurt shoulder and had a cut on his head, police say. He was transported to Ochsner Medical Center in Kenner for treatment.

St. John Detectives are preparing an arrest warrant for Johnson for attempted murder. Once he is released from the hospital, Johnson will be arrested for unrelated charges.
