NOPD officer charged with theft of government funds

A New Orleans police officer was charged by the U.S. attorney Tuesday with theft of government funds, according to an NOPD news release.

Tracie Medus, 39, was placed on unpaid emergency suspension pending the outcome of the case.

According to the Bill of Information, from about July 2009 to about March 2011, Medus stole $158,700 from the Louisiana Road Home's Small Rental Property Program. Medus allegedly got the funds in the form of an award funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to twice the theft amount.
