A Westwego man has been arrested on incest charges following the alleged molestation of an 11-year-old relative. Deputies say this is the second time he has been accused of incest in the past 20 years.
John Paul Vajas, Jr., 43, is accused of sexually abusing a known relative. Police say they believe there may be other victims in the investigation and are urging them to come forward.
In September, the victim reported an alleged sexual abuse in 2011 when the victim was 11-years-old. The incident occurred in Belle Chasse, the victim tells authorities. After the offense, Vajas told the victim "don't tell anyone," according to the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office.
Throughout the course of the investigation, deputies discovered that Vajas was accused of sexually assaulting a second known relative in 1997. This alleged incident happened when the victim was 5-years-old, officers say.
The allegations from the 1997 case were reported to the New Orleans Police Department and investigated by physicians and the Office of Child Services. Plaquemines Parish detectives state they were unable to determine the outcome of the NOPD investigation.
On October 28, Vajas was arrested by members of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office at his place of work. He was booked as a fugitive from Plaquemines Parish. Warrants were obtained for sexual battery, molestation of a juvenile and aggravated incest. The warrants are based on crimes that allegedly occurred in Plaquemines Parish.
Vajas was booked in Belle Chasse Lockup on October 29. He remains in custody on a $450,000 bond.
Other victims or individuals with additional information are asked to contact Detective Aaron Verrette at (504) 564-2525 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
