Northshore DA runoff candidates split endorsements from ex-opponents

COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) -

One week after falling short in the primary, former St. Tammany and Washington Parish DA candidate Alan Black is throwing his support behind Brian Trainor.

Trainor, a chief St. Tammany deputy currently on leave, and Warren Montgomery, a former federal prosecutor, are battling for the office held by Walter Reed for 30 years.

Tuesday, both candidates reacted to the endorsement.

"Well, it means, hopefully, that we've broadened our base of support. We've got a lot of supporters throughout the judicial district," Trainor said.

Montgomery said he's disappointed.

"One, (Black) told me he would endorse me if we got into a runoff with Mr. Trainor," Montgomery said.

However, Montgomery does have the backing of another former candidate, Roy Burns, who announced his endorsement last week.

Still, the two opponents say this runoff goes much deeper.

"Of course I'm happy that Mr. Burns endorsed me, but this race is not about endorsements. it's about qualifications. It's about independence," Montgomery said.

"No guarantees. In politics, this doesn't guarantee anything other than we're going to keep working hard until December 6," Trainor said.

With so many problems surrounding the office, both Trainor and Montgomery vow to turn things around. Now, they continue the push to sway voters across St. Tammany and Washington Parishes.

"Going to get out there, shake as many hands as we can, get in front of as many groups, meet as many people and sell them on the message of what I am - law enforcement, prosecution, public safety," Trainor said.

"I'm just going to continue to bring that message of one, restoring integrity and two, to keep our communities safe and our families safe, and I can do that because I've got the qualifications and the experience to do it," Montgomery said.
