New St. Jude Dream Home to be built near the lake

Construction begins next week in Lakeview on the new St. Jude Dream Home.

The house in the 6900 block of West End Boulevard will belong to someone who buys a raffle ticket, and the proceeds will help children treated at St. Jude. The home is the 10th one built in the New Orleans area.

"We have such a  large presence of patients in the New Orleans area," said Jim Barkate, a board member of ALSAC/St. Jude. "Citizens open up their hearts and checkbooks to St. Jude,"

Hyman Bartolo Contractors have partnered to build the home.

"This is a highly traveled street, plus the design of the home is an excellent design," said Bartolo as he surveyed the lot.

Gerald Mire focuses on interiors for the company.

"We'll have coffered ceilings in the den and 11-foot ceilings downstairs," he said.

Bartolo understands the mission. He recently visited St. Jude in in Memphis and the children he's working  to help.

"We got to travel the life of a cancer patient," Bartolo said. "His name was Nick. At the end of the night, Nick came out to talk to us. He was cancer free."

Jon Luther is with the Home Builders of Greater New Orleans. He says a lot of the organizations vendors get involved and donate everything from air conditioning to lighting and appliances.

Barkate says ticket sales will go quickly.

"Last year we sold 10,500. This year we have 11,000," he said.
