Money approved for coastal protection in Lafourche

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority awarded $145.7 million for the construction of the second part of the Caminada Headland Beach and Dune Restoration Project in Lafourche Parish.

The project aims to add barrier island shoreline to protect the mainland from storm damage.

The Daily Comet reports (http://bit.ly/1sHU2j1 ) about 489 acres of beach and dune habitat will be created and about seven additional miles of beach will be restored. The project is expected to begin in spring 2015 and take between 18 and 24 months to complete, weather-permitting.

Jerome Zeringue, Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority chairman, says the beachfront protecting Port Fourchon and businesses associated with it has experienced significant land loss.
