FOX 8 Defenders: Crews haul off old railroad ties

The FOX 8 Defenders exposed an eyesore in Plaquemines Parish and received results within hours. Viewers captured an image along Highway 23, near Belle Chasse and Jesuit Bend Friday morning.

Crews from the New Orleans and Gulf Coast Railway Company were out collecting old railroad ties that have littered the railway's right of way for months.

The FOX 8 Defenders showed you the mess last night, and tracked down answers from the head of the railroad. Robert Bach, President and Chief Operating Officer of Rio Grande Pacific Corporation, told us to ensure the railbed's safety, the company has replaced nearly 7,000 ties since April. However, a bridge project in Jefferson Parish that required the railway's maintenance crew delayed efforts to get old ties cleaned up. Bach says next year, they're looking at hiring a contractor to do that work alone.

Residents and business owners who turned to the FOX 8 Defenders when they couldn't get answers on the eyesore are thrilled to see the old ties are being hauled away.
