Housekeeper arrested after $25,000 in jewelry disappears

KENNER, LA (WVUE) - A Metairie woman was arrested Wednesday after police said she stole more than $25,000 from the 71-year-old woman who employed her as a housekeeper in Kenner.

Nixirela Rodriguez, 37, of Diane Place, was booked with felony theft.

The investigation began Monday, when the victim reported jewelry missing from a safe in her home. The victim told Kenner police that she suspected Rodriguez after discovering a safe key missing. She told police that Rodriguez had access to every room in the residence, and had been texting her excuses on why she could not come to work.

An investigation revealed that Rodriguez had been pawning jewelry from September 2013 through October of this year. Some of the items pawned were found to belong to the victim.

During an interview, Rodriguez admitted to taking the safe key, throwing it away and pawing property. Police also learned that Rodriguez is a self-employed housekeeper and cleans several homes in the metropolitan area.

Rodriguez remains in custody; no bond has been set.

Kenner Police Chief Michael Glaser urges anyone with information about Rodriguez, anyone who believes they were a victim of a similar theft to call the Kenner Police Detective Trey Hille at (504) 712-2213, or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
