SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - Thanksgiving and the feasts that come with the holidays are upon us.
A lot of people in the south like to take their turkeys outdoors and deep fry the birds.
But, fire officials say without the proper equipment and training, frying turkeys can lead to dangerous fires.
Firefighters in St. Tammany Parish hope to make the public aware of the dangers associated with frying turkeys by holding a demonstration on what can go wrong.
Officials discourage people from using propane turkey fryers. That can make a small fire turn into a calamity. They say another common mistake is over-filling fryers with too much oil. Firefighters say if the turkey is not placed carefully into the fryer hot oil could splash causing a fire.
Fire safety experts say if you do not know what you are doing, leave the cooking to a professional at a restaurant or grocery store.
