NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A SWAT team was called after a 38-year-old man allegedly poured bleach on his girlfriend and threatened to kill her.
The SWAT team was called to the 1800 block of Canal Street around 5 a.m. Tuesday. Officers first received reports that a man armed with a knife barricaded himself inside of a home. He has been identified as Christophe Alfred.
He surrendered to police shortly after 12:20 p.m.
Officers say that the incident began as an argument between a woman and her 38-year-old boyfriend. Police say that the suspect threw bleach on the victim and threatened to kill her.
The victim was able to break away and call police.
Officers arriving on the scene found the suspect armed with a knife allegedly threatening to kill himself.
Negotiators are currently on the scene attempting to talk to the suspect. The downtown side of Canal Street is closed from S. Claiborne Ave. to S. Roman until further notice.
Alfred will be booked with domestic assault and domestic battery.
