DHH head: 'alarming rate' of ADHD medication in La

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana's health secretary says the state has an "alarming rate" of medicating kids for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Secretary Kathy Kliebert will hold a free symposium about the syndrome in Baton Rouge on Tuesday, Dec. 9.

She says parents, teachers, health care professionals and others are welcome.

Topics will include frequency of diagnosis, medication rates, and proper use of ADHD medications.

Kliebert says a report by the nation's largest pharmacy, Express Scripts, found that Louisiana has the nation's highest ADHD medication rate for girls aged 12-18 and women aged 19-25 and the second-highest rates for the population overall and for boys aged 12 to 18.
